Upgrade Appliance option greyed out in the ZVM Linux appliance management UI

Machine-distilled from a resolved support ticket on 2026-09-28. Source ref: ac02f604a43f. Verify before relying on it.

Applies to: Zerto 10.0 Linux ZVM appliance on vSphere, seen when upgrading from Update 7 to Update 8. Reported as fixed in Update 8.

Symptom: When trying to upgrade a Zerto Linux ZVM appliance from the web management interface, the Upgrade Appliance option is greyed out and cannot be selected, even when logged in with the appliance admin account. Stopping any running failover tests on the appliance does not make the option available.

Cause: A known product defect that Zerto has not documented publicly. It was initially suspected to be a permissions problem in the user federation and role mapping for the admin user. It is not caused by the logged in account lacking admin rights.

Resolution: 1. Rule out a real blocker first: make sure no failover tests or other operations are running on the appliance. 2. If the option is still greyed out, open the appliance management interface in a browser and go directly to the /management/upgrade path, appended to the appliance management URL. 3. Run the upgrade from that page. 4. After upgrading to Update 8 or later, the defect should be resolved and the menu option should work normally. If the direct path also fails, raise the issue with Zerto support.
