Regarding IR restore for IR Hyper-V VSS backup sets, if the mount vm option is not selected in the IR restore wizard the vm will be restored in the IR storage, and the user must import it manually in the Hyper-V manager

To mount the Hyper-V VM follow these steps:

  1. Delete the existing VM with the same name and ID if exists.
  2. Merge all the generation folders to one folder. You need merge the incremental generation to full generations based on the timestamp order.  Overwrite the file if there are duplicated files.  If the generation has only one full generation, then you do not need this step.
  3. Move all the files in the combined folder to one folder and make a standard Hyper-V VM folder. One standard Hyper-V VM folder contains 3 sub-folders: SnapshotsVirtual Hard Disks, and Virtual Machines. Move all the disk files (VHD, VHDX) to Virtual Hard Disks folder. Move all snapshots files to Snapshots folder and move all virtual machines configuration files to Virtual Machines folder.
  4. In Hyper-V Manager right-click on the Hyper-V server name > Import Virtual Machine.. to import a required VM.
  5. Choose "Register the virtual machine in place" in the choose Import Type screen.
  6. If the VM is backed up from Hyper-V Server 2016, you may get an error "The virtual hard disk .... in path .. count not be found" error (see pictures). Then you need to go to the Virtual Hard Disks folder to find the files that end with -AutoRecovery.avhdx and with latest timestamp. Then rename this file to the missed file in the error message.
  7. Now Close the Import wizard and try to import the VM again.
  8. Rum the imported VM in Hyper-V manager to ensure that it is working as expected.
