Symptoms

1. When backing up Windows 2008, Windows 2008R2 or Windows VISTA Operating Systems, the backup activity may fail and DS-Client may report the message: "The request is not supported." or "Operation not supported." in DS-Client Event Log. The backup target machine may report the following message in the Operating System Application Event Viewer: Source: VSS Keep-alive Event ID: 65535 Description: "The description for Event ID 65535 from source VSS Keep-alive cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event".

2. When backing up Windows Server 2016, the backup activity may fail and DS-Client reports the message: "The request is not supported.(ExecuteProgram)", or  "...The task has been configured with an unsupported combination of account settings and run time options." in DS-Client Event Log. The backup target machine does NOT report any messages in the Operating System Application Event Viewer.

3. When backing up Windows Server 2019, the backup event log reports the message: "The system cannot find the file specified.  (\\]\ADMIN$\complusbackup\\sfcfiles.lst)",

or the the DS-Client enabled Debug Log reports: "..The task has been configured with an unsupported combination of account settings and run time options..". The backup target machine does NOT report any messages in the Operating System Application Event Viewer.

Cause

1. DS-Clients running on Windows 2008,Windows 2008R2 or Windows Vista Operating Systems may report the above when backing up with file system backup sets with "Backup Streams" option enabled for remote machines.

2. The security policy on the target Windows Server 2016 machine does not allow to start remotely VSS writer, which is initiated by vsscontrol.exe, settled in C:\Windows\complusbackup\\ folder on the target machine (after it was delivered by DS-Client).

3. The security policy on the target Windows Server 2019 machine does not allow to start remotely VSS writer, which is initiated by vsscontrol.exe and sfcfiles.exe, settled in C:\Windows\complusbackup\\ folder on the backup source machine (after it was delivered by DS-Client).

Workaround

1. Microsoft released a Hot Fix that must be applied on the DS-Client machine and / or on the backup target machine: Microsoft KB: 973278 ( it can be applied both to Windows Vista and Windows 2008). For Windows 2008 R2 the corresponding KB is 2064460.

2. On the backup target Windows Server 2016 in Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall > put ticks for "Domain", "Private" and "Public" for Remote Scheduled Task Management service.

3. Enable "Remote Scheduled Task Management" settings on the backup target Windows Server 2019: in Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall > higlight "Remote Scheduled Task Management" and put ticks for "Domain", "Private" and "Public" items.
