Symptoms

The error might be reported during VSS backup of a Windows 2008 machine with a DS-Client running on Windows 2012 or vice versa.

Cause

The following Microsoft KBs have not been applied either on the DS-Client computer or on the backup source:
1) Windows 7 or Windows 2008 R2 computer: Microsoft KB 2064460.
2) Windows 2008 or Windows Vista: Microsoft KB 973278.
3) Windows 8 and Windows 2012: Microsoft KB 2973055 (select to download Fix502462).
4) Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2, install the update rollup 2975719. Alternatively, the issue can be resolved by installing first the update 2919355 and then KB 2973055 (select to download Fix509764).

Solution

Please download and apply the Microsoft KBs on the computers involved in the backup process.
