Symptoms


  

An administrator may see the following alert in the Zerto Virtual Replication GUI: "VPG [X] journal history is less than [X]% of the configured [X] Hours".   This article explains the meaning and trigger for this form of alert.

Solution

 

Configuring a VPG includes specifying a default Journal CDP History, which is the time for which checkpoints and associated data will be kept in a journal, prior to being applied to the target volume.  Prior to 2.0 Update 4 (Zebra), the journal was provisioned for each VPG, however starting with 2.0 Update 4 (Zebra), journals are provisioned for each VM within a VPG.  

An alert is issued in the following circumstances:

  • If 1 hour of CDP history is configured for a VPG and the any of the journals contain less than 75% of the configured CDP history, an ?Error? level alert is displayed.

  • If more than 1 hour of CDP history is configured for a VPG and the journals contain less than one hour of the configured CDP history, an ?Error? level alert is displayed.  

  • If more than 1 hour of CDP history is configured for a VPG and the journals contain more than one hour but less than 75% of the configured CDP history, a ?Warning? level alert is displayed.

Some circumstances under which these alerts are issued:

  • Resource limitations due to a WAN slowdown/outage or a storage IO problem may result in the journals not being able to queue up enough checkpoints/data to meet the CDP History.

  • The CDP History may be increased to a point where the current queue of checkpoints/data is less than 75% or 85% of the new configuration.

It is important to note that despite these alerts, this issue does not affect the recoverability of the affected VPG and the alerts will turn off automatically once the situation is resolved.
